I read the story on the condo Monday on Yahoo. The man who lives there won't move because he spent his life savings buying the place. I can understand that. Ft. Myers is basically a tourism town, as I remember. I doubt it's very friendly to homeless folk.

The existence of the island of garbage in the Pacific is a perfect example of a cover-up that got too big to keep hidden any more. Even then, you don't hear about it often, not even from environmentalist groups. I first heard about it a few years back, and at the time they were saying it was about the size of Alaska, although I think others say its size is closer to that of Texas.

It's nice that they're finally getting people out to study it, but what we really need to do is clean it up. It'll take generations to accomplish, and will need the invention of specialized tools to do it.

It might actually just be easier to cement all that crap together and then sell it as cheap land to people. :/ We can move mountains, but I don't think the equivalent of relocating an entire state has been done before.

It's not an island. Most of the plastic has degraded to pieces smaller than the eye can see.
