pet peeves

There are certain "tics" of written style that tend to show up more in online conversations, or other places where people generally Say A Thing and then release it to the masses, without any third party editing involved. "The question of" works if it's just shorthand for something everyone in a select group already knows. For example, at a recent staff meeting someone said, "We need to talk about the question the reference collection." Now everyone there already knew about reference collection and what was going wrong with it so rehashing the whole story was pointless since we just wanted to talk about the solutions.

For something like that, why not just say "We need to talk about the reference collection" directly?

IMHO, you may not adequately appreciate the immense complexity of the question of pet peeves. Perhaps you should look into it, rather than venting your frustration against those of us who already get it.

I very frequently start posts with a construct like "Well," or "OK, so," a facile informality that sounds great when I've been mulling the subject over in my mind but reads as very forced. I've noticed others do it too.
