Since flint_the_dwarf and I were talking about it, I present to you Dresden Doll's "Coin-Operated Boy" for your listening pleasure (or displeasure, as the case may be). I personally love it--it's the quintessential bitter-girl's anthem.

Streaming WMA format; high-quality, but there's a bit of instrumental stuff cut out from the middle. Nothing important, but Read more... )

MG is very depleated. I would imagine, after the tragic death of a key member.
Just Mr. Blair, a guitarist, and help from J on drums in a few songs.
The African drumming will be missed.

It's exactly what I thought it would be.

Is that good or bad?

Sure, it's depreciating to men, but that doesn't mean it's not awesome and fun.

Well, I can't say I relate with the message, but sure, it's fun and so on and so forth. =p

Can't you? Seriously, how often in the media are women objectified? It's pretty frequent. Take Trillian from Hitchhiker's Guide. A kick-ass character from the book is turned into a dewey-eyed love interest. I'm sure the movie version of Arthur Dent will love and cherish the movie Trillian, but she still comes off as something of a mere object. "Hello, my name is now Trillian, and I am a wild and zany love interest, aren't I pretty, and anyway what happened to my calm, cool, and collected control that I had in the book?"

HG isn't exactly the best example, I'll admit. The best ones involve porn and prostitution. And what about the whole "Trophy Wife" concept? Or the model homemaker on the other end of the spectrum? (As a side note, I am a feminist because I am neither sexy nor domestic.)

*shrug* I just think it's nice to have a song from the opposite point of view every once in a while.

Wait, I thought she was singing about a- no, never mind.

Incidentally, I am a feminist, too. I'd kinda like more songs like this that scream, "Girls can be confident and independent, too!"
