He may also be going over the plans for an especially small size of axe.

Gimli leads the way across the space between the Bar and the small stone building not far away. It's towards the stables, but closer to the lake than that building. Forges smell. It cannot be helped. So do those who work in them. This, also, cannot be helped.

Therefore, it is probably in your better interests not to ask why Gimli (who has apparently decided on a hobbit-sized breakfast today) does not particularly reek of iron and smoke right now. You might find out.

Other things, however, are fair game.

For some reason Gimli doesn't seem to be able to go more than a day or two in the forges at Mount Etna without finding that whatever door he walks through brings him back here. That's okay, though.
