There'd been denial, he'd sat at that chair facing the front hall, with Charlie at his feet and waited. Because this was her home, she lived here and Bill couldn't let himself believe she was gone. He'd owled work, claiming the flu and taking time off without pay. Because how was he supposed to go to work and hold it together? When there was nothing left for him, nothing at all

Remus was very familiar with despair. He'd been much younger than the young man when he'd spent weeks holed up in a squalid lid tavern on the edges of the Black Forest. Whiskey permeating from his pores and smoke hanging around him like a thundercloud and several days' beard growth darkening his chin, it was a wonder Glamis had even looked twice at the hotheaded young werewolf looking to lose his sense of everything in booze and barmaids and brawls. He'd lost everything he had left to live for in one terrible night and he hadn't cared a whit if the rage and desperation gnawing at his gut ate him alive and anyone foolish enough to come close to him

It was probably a good thing Bill didn't feel up to going out... There was always a fight to be found for a man looking for one and when faced with an outlet Bill might be tempted to take it. Not to mention the barmaids, a drunk Bill could sometimes be rather charming... That was the very last thing he needed.
Remus moved forward and Bill blocked his path with his leg. "Fleur's fine, I'm fine." Greyback had been the furthest thing from his mind, but now he realized the feral man had got what he'd wanted. The most important thing in Bill's life was gone... And he knew that it was his own fault. Bill was just made to watch as his life turned to sand and slipped through his fingers. Reaching out to lay a shaking hand on Remus' shoulder, bloodshot eyes finally raised enough to look at his friend's face

For a moment Remus could only stare. He heard the words, but his mind was unable to grasp their meaning. It seemed impossible they could mean what it sounded like.
