I think it's what you're describing, though. I did mean for her to be young, and somewhat reckless, but I didn't mean for her to be totally clueless. If I'm still bugged by it later I'll add some details I'd left out for pacing. It might help.

There's such a wonderful difference between 'I apologise' and 'I'm sorry', and this chapter shows that difference beautifully.

"Brightbolt?" Now Nova felt sure her audio receptors were malfunctioning. "Our Brightbolt?" I liked this, he's our Brightbolt as soon as it looks like he did something impressive, possibly she could admire, even if she doesn't believe it.
I'd still like to see her kick the slag out of him. ;) But then again, I'd love to see her kick the slag out of Bane, if it came to it. Yeah, I like violent protags who don't have qualms about their capacity for violence.
