But for anyone who actually wanted to get out of the hotel, there was plenty to do today. The morning program for Fandom was filled with an introductory look at the Habitat for Humanity housing project they'd be working on all week. Tara wasn't exactly strong, but there were some parts of the framework that were more about balancing things and hammering them together than sheer brute force. She thought she could do that.

A few minutes later, she was sitting on the sidelines and sucking on her thumb. Hammering worked better when you didn't smash your fingertips.

Tara took the thumb out of her mouth and carefully prodded at it with her index finger. Not broken, just a little smashed.

"Would you believe me if I said it was a rogue hammer?" she asked.

"Just hopping around, waiting to bash people's fingers?" Ben grinned. "If we were on the island, yeah."

"A good thing to learn early," Ben decided, "but I don't think you should just let the hammer win."

"Yeah?" Tara asked, and blew on the thumb again. It was hurting less. "Maybe I should ... use it to beat up on some nails. That might make it pay."

"Oh, definitely," Ben said, nodding. "I'd wait a bit before upgrading to anything run with a cord, though."

"So what do you think they'd make us do if we accidentally burned down one of the houses?" Tara wondered. "'Cause that's way against the point of the trip."

"He still scares me," Tara said softly. "So. Uh. We're extra super careful?"
