Not happy with this

I always don't like Merlin in ep. 2x09. But I dislike him more after I get Merlin Official Annual 2011. Here is one paragraph from the book.

His destiny didn't matter. Arthur would be fine without him. All that mattered was that this lovelly girl needed him - and he could be happy with her. He could be himself.

I don't know what's wrong with Merlin ( Read more... )

Aww... But I felt like Merlin kind of deserved to be selfish for once, y'know? He has a hard life. He has to live in secret - like that quote states, he can't be himself 95% of the time. Most everyone looks down on him...and then this pretty girl that he thinks is just like him comes along. Like he says in that episode, he's never met anyone like her before. I dunno. I thought it was understandable, although not the right choice for him to (try to) make. But he's still young, and learning to do what's right over what's easy.

I blame the writers. They wrote Merlin this way. I had a discussion with a friend the other day. She said "of course if Merlin is not happy, he can leave with Freya, but not the way he did in this episode." My friend said he could tell Arthur directly that he is not happy and wants to leave. You know, kinda of like how Gwen talked to Arthur in ep. 2x02. The show's producers/writers are too obssessed with the idea of "keeping magic secret".

Telling Arthur anything could potentially have put Freya in danger, though. Especially if he left at the same time the "cursed girl" did, which they would eventually figure out. Leaving in secret would probably be safest.

This was a really brash, spur of the moment thing for Merlin, too. All of the sudden he thinks it would be grand to run off with this girl and live a new life. It's not the kind of situation where he would inform others of his decision. He's essentially running away.

At this point, both Arthur and Merlin are still immature, which I don't think is a terrible choice. It's realistic, although I do hope it starts changing this season.

Hmm... but he doesn't have to tell Arthur anything about Freya. It's always good to give a notice before leaving a job. LOL!

Anyway, I want to say Merlin abandoning his destiny like that in ep. 2x09 is very OOC to me.

Yeah that came way out of left field and made no sense. I even thought he and Freya were cute together. And I liked he got to be happy even for a little while, but no way would be abandon his destiny.

I really don't like the sentence - his destiny didn't matter. Destiny is what the show is about in the episodes before and after 2x09. In my opinion, Merlin is very OOC in this episode.

I think that's why the tagline for S2 was "You can't escape your destiny" because, well, we see here, Merlin tried to escape it. LOL. But it was never to be.

Probably should read that he THINKS Arthur would be fine without him, because Arthur isn't good at showing it at ALL. Perhaps if he THOUGHT Arthur really wanted/needed him (as an advisor, protector or lover--one, two or all but I think he'd take one, even the least one) he might not have been so rash.

Let's just hope things between A/M will get better in S3. I trust Bradley and Colin's onscreen chemistry, but I don't trust the writers.

I dunno..after all the shit Merlin has gone through, I can see him being selfish and on a spur of the moment going "Fuck this, I'm going to think about myself and no one else!" Because that's what I think this episode was trying to show. Merlin being selfish, wanting something for himself. His own LIFE. And you know, I can't blame him. Not to mention Arthur is a dick most of the time anyway. And Merlin can't trust him at all. That's sad.

> Not to mention Arthur is a dick most of the time anyway.

Because you're a merlin girl, so you tend to remember those moments. In fact, Arthur saves Merlin's butt all the time since ep. 206.

Arthur being a dick (or a prat) is what the writers consider as an important aspect of the A/M dynamic. I think it's a poor judgement.

And I don't think it's Arthur's (wrong?) doings which make Merlin not trust him. It's Merlin's own doings, esp. after ep. 2x08. He made the decision which reinforces Arthur's foul attitude towards Magic.

Yes, it is poor judgment. It was fine in the first season, but after a while, Arthur needs to change with Merlin, otherwise Arthur really IS a dick, saving Merlin or not saving Merlin.

I can explain WHY he had to do what he had to do in 2x08, but I can't concentrate (too much pain right now). Just like I can explain why he had to do what he had to do in 2x12.

I think Merlin was rushing a bit. He was taken by the moment, being in love for the first time, feeling free to be himself and feel appreciated for the first time in his life. Loved for what he really is.

Also, I believe Merlin's story in the legend is always about how foolish he was around women, how he easily was seduced by them. It was the means to his own failure after all.
BUT, the fact that they didn't make Merlin have a second thought stinges a tinsy bit indeed ^^
