[Have a calm Dracula speaking in a very measured and diplomatic tone...with two-foot icicles dripping off of it.]

I resent the implication that my race is somehow untrustworthy to a man. I for one honor my bargains. In this place I have all but sweated blood to fulfill them. Such a shame to see such an intelligent man spouting such blanket ( Read more... )

Please explain. I feel I must apologize for being slow to find someone to help you regain your experience of being D.

I spoke to him a long while. He seemed competent despite the more amusing parts of his personality.

It is fine. It has not been that long. Thank you for looking.

The Dracula you spoke to was twice my age. He had not killed anyone in over a century. He preferred to use his powers to humiliate, disarm and disable. And he was very, very good at it.

I am not a telekinetic, as he was, but I was once capable of fascination. He would stop people, make them sleep, things of that nature.

When we do finally discuss any incremental restoration of my power, that I believe is the one I would prefer to regain. It is the least violence oriented of my abilities and could in fact prevent violence.

Evading trouble with wit is a commendable skill. I will have to research the extent of your fascination. I suspect there would be those on board who would be afraid of you amassing an army of witless supporters, starting with me.

An army of witless supporters? Ha. I suppose you would fear that that were my aim. [very bitter.] But no. I wish only to regain a power that less well-behaved vampires on this Barge already possess, so that I have a nonviolent option in a confrontation.

True, an army of supporters would be preferable to the army of witless detractors I face around here.

Yes. As 'recovered' as one can get in this place, anyway.

[A grunt of agreement] No more trouble from your Warden, I am hoping?

...

Oh my. Have you noticed some of the newcomers yet?

You're Aleera's, right? Whatever your word for Blood King is.

These days I am nothing to Aleera. But I once was her Maker.

That's the equivalent term, I think.

People have no love for vampirics here, but at least there are a lot of you.

You were both human?

We were. Once. Not an experience I intend to repeat.

I think you should be able to expect better.

Well, so do I, but we are in the vast minority, Tony. My people are a well loved target for mortal bigotry no matter how well-behaved we are.

Yeah. I know. I mean, that's why vampires back home hid it.

If I had had the opportunity to hide my nature and the foresight to change my name I would have done so. The Admiral did not grant that.

And I resent how 'your people' are a bunch of literally evil mass-murderers, who always seem to take advantage of someone when they think they can get away with it. Usually, involving some kind of mutilation.

But I guess we can't have everything...

No.

He's the one who can't work out why people don't trust things which generally shouldn't be trusted.
