Title:  Logical Consequence

Disclaimer: Not mine.

A/N:  I started writing this with a different idea in mind, but this plotless character introspective is what resulted.  It fits with this week’s hawaii_5_0_100  prompt, jealousy.  Much thanks to geminigrl11  for the beta.

Summary:  Facts are facts, and Danny’s too good of a cop to ignore the conclusions that come from that.

-o-

Danny doesn’t know if he should be jealous or relieved.  To him, it’s really all a matter of perspective, a difference in interpretation, the ability to take the same set of facts and come to two disparate and perplexingly opposite conclusions.

Fact;  Steve McGarrett is his partner.  This wasn’t entirely a choice on Danny’s part, but if he had really wanted to, he could have walked--hell, ran--a long time ago.  But he hasn’t and he lets McGarrett drive his car and he walks into Steve’s place without knocking, so it’s a done deal by now.

Fact:  Steve McGarrett is psychotic.  Well-trained, well-intentioned, but psychotic nonetheless.  He can find trouble in any situation and if there’s a proper way to do something, Steve finds the wrong way without fail.  He inspires violence and Danny knows criminals with a better grasp of the law than Steve.

Fact:  Steve McGarrett is usually right.  This is a frustrating truth, but McGarrett’s record speaks for itself.

Fact:  Steve is a superhero.  This is a bit of an exaggeration, but not much of one.  McGarrett can’t leap buildings in a single bound, but he can fly a helicopter over the whole damn island and he somehow has access to Navy tracking capabilities with one phone call and a smirk.  He can swim like a fish and has a flying tackle that puts the idea of x-ray vision to shame.

With this fact set, Danny can come to two possible conclusions.

1.  Steve is the next chain in human evolution and Danny would be wise to take note.  Truthfully, it’s hard not to be jealous, if only because Steve has the inexplicable ability to be completely certain in his own conclusions and actions, however ludicrous they might be.  Danny is so hindered by reality and the workings of the law that he simply can’t compete.

2.  Steve is the lone hold out of past human evolution.  He’s an aberration of fight or flight, except he’s let go of the flight entirely and focused solely on the fight.  His instincts are still basic, though, unfettered by the ideals imposed by civilization and society.  He upholds the law with a vigilante’s flair and Danny can take solace in knowing Steve is surely the last of his kind.

It’s not certain which conclusion is the best one to Danny, and ultimately, he figures it’s probably a little of both.  He’s annoyed, jealous, relieved, and kind of awed, because some facts matter more than others.

Fact:  Steve trusts Danny.  To do the right thing, to play sane to his crazy.  Two complementary elements that make the big picture work.

Fact:  Danny trusts Steve.  To be a superhero, to be right, to be psychotic, to be his partner, to be his friend.

Denial, jealousy, acceptance, relief.

3.  Steve McGarrett is his friend.  Better and worse and everything in between.

Facts are facts, and Danny’s too good of a cop to ignore the conclusions that come from that.
