APPARENTLY NOBODY TOLD ME THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO START STRESSING ABOUT PROM LIKE, A MONTH AGO? It is going to be in May. I need a date because I am succumbing to the pressures of school/society. And a dress, except I'm really good at shopping so it'll be all right.

People who have gone to prom! Tell me how it's done! Especially if you asked a boy

I brought a very nice, very WASPish, rather boring scholar-athlete type from the year below me! He was a pleasant enough date, and I guess he liked me, but tbh? I had a lot more fun just dicking around with my girlfriends (none of whom had dates, except the one with an actual boyfriend).

Did you just ask him outright? Were you guys platonic friends before that?

I mean, we were friendly with each other? I was the trainer for his baseball team, so we'd met that way, and I thought he was a sweet kid, so asking him seemed like an all right choice. It was all pretty low key, actually - I'd say don't sweat it. :)

I asked a friend, and we awkwardly slow danced and did the cha-cha slide and had a mediocre time before we went with another guy friend to escape early to the cabin we had rented so we didn't have to be at prom anymore! I'm not a very big social gathering person, though. Also, my prom had a Vegas theme, which is awful.

I just sent my friend a "be my awesome platonic prom date, I will buy your ticket and we will defy gender norms" Facebook message, too, so I could be really clear that I didn't want to sleep with him.

Prom dress shopping is so fun, though! I would recommend taking a whole day with some friends to try on the ridiculous princess ones that you can't even walk in, before you even bother to find an actual dress.

Also, if you feel inclined to drink alcohol at any after party, do not accidentally drink large amounts of vodka! Especially if you've never drank before and don't really plan on making it a habit, like me. Because then you become a morality tale involving vomit and sadness.

Oh dear, a Vegas theme. It's like the prom was asking you to be foolish teenagers... (We don't even have a venue yet, so...)

I need/want to ask an attractive platonic casual friend whom I've liked for 1.5 years, so I think a FB message might be a no-go for me. Though I'm open to paying for his ticket.

But now you can tell this non-morality tale involving vomit and sadness!

WELL my prom served dinner at the thing, and my three best girlfriends and I had all gone stag to homecoming earlier, so we went stag--heck, I think almost my entire friend group went stag, except for one guy, but even then the girl he invited was just a friend and was friends with the rest of us too.

so we just showed up and ate food and danced and about 10 all the people who wanted to do more "traditional" prom activities left and the rest of us kept dancing and our teachers joined in on some of the older songs and it was awesome.

/fails at advice

OH I did ask boys to homecoming freshman-junior years of high school, and I had a crush on two of them at the time. Iiiiiiii am pretty sure all were asked via email. And then we went and had fun and I flirted with them (freshman year success rate: ...I will have to ask him; sophomore year success rate: he was gay and I was in denial; junior year success rate: we just went as friends so the flirting was just for funsies) and we danced and life was good.

GOOD LUCK
