I hope there was no lovemaking, because if there was, Spike apparently took it as nothing but pity sex. :(

I sort of feel like there would have been some sign between them if they'd taken that step. And not just "signaling with my eyes", either. It's hard to imagine Spike being able to hide his feelings - unless, as you imply, Buffy somehow indicated that it was just a bit of cold comfort.

After reading SMS's old ficlets earlier today, I'm inclined to think that the "flaming hands o' glory" was the sex scene equivalent, something lostboy_lj indicated in his essay The Chosen "O".

Yeah, I think it can be read that way - though Spike still seems to see it as symbolic pity sex. *g*

Pity sex would have been humiliating for Spike, demeaning for Buffy. if there had been something, it would have shown somehow the next day.

I really missed closure between them... but then, would there have been so much fan-fiction if the ending had been satisfying?

PS: Joss is a stinky coward for avoiding to take a stand!
