Okay, this novel is really ridiculous in concept and fucked up on a lot of levels (classism, ableism, and cultural appropriation), but HOLY SHIT it's iddy. It's a Boys' Own Adventure story. Slashy as all hell, if you age the two main characters up. Major, **major** loyalty kink. Idealized nationalism/royalty. The exiled True King raising the True Prince in shabby gentility. The True Prince's BFF is a 13-year-old military genius. There are visits to the most glamorous cities of Europe on what would have been the cusp of WWI in real life. We encounter a lovely and dangerous spy with a soft spot for brave young boys. All sorts of nobles and commoners profess their devotion to The Cause.

Osprey Archer has been writing a post-book fic in which the main characters are aged up, although it's gen:

SA - Oh, and yes, the exiled True King is raising his son (whose mother died when he was four) to be unrealistically self-denying, self-controlled, etc. In the context of the rest of the canon, it doesn't bother me, but IRL it'd be considered abusive.

AYRT: YAY!

Incidentally, while there's not enough activity yet for a community, Surexit has a "newsletter" of sorts going:

oh my god, I'm in tears.

Where has this been all my life? They're at that mountain chalet with the old woman and she curtsies and it's so beautiful and nothing hurts.

My id is eternally grateful.

same anon (again!)

"He had secretly even felt this attitude to be a sort of grievance. It would have been more like a game if one of them had been the mere servitor of the other, and if that other had blustered a little, and issued commands, and demanded sacrifices."

Where is all the d/s fic???

You know what I really really really WANT (love you, source material, for the random capslock!):

a modern au crossover with the eagle of the ninth .... just let that sink in for a moment.

Because in what world would Marcus and The Rat not bond right away about their dammit-not-a-soldier issues? Or Marcus and Marco (OHMYGOD! THE NAMES!) about their fathers? Or epic quests with your loyal servant!

May I polish your boots? May I?

Fuck that I'll write it.

NA - Whoa. I requested this fandom for Yuletide once, wasn't matched, and gave up any hope of fic. Clearly I gave up too soon.
