Summary: Yet that first step on the yellow brick road, the first step of her adventures, was surely real.

Later on when she’s a woman grown, Dorothy will always wonder if the yellow brick road was real or just a figment of her imagination. The ruby slippers that she lost after she had clicked her heels three times were surely just the product of a fevered dream. The friends that she had made on her journey to find the wizard were really just archetypes of her friends on the farm.
Yet that first step on the yellow brick road, the first step of her adventures, was surely real. She had made a decision when she set one foot and then the other down that path that took her away from the witch she had accidentally killed and towards her way home again. Dorothy’s not sure what that decision was, not even now as a grown woman, her adventures in a wonderful land faded with age.
The only thing that still gives her pause, that makes her think that it was more than a fevered dream of a girl on the brink of adulthood, that the decision that she made was real, was the fact that Miss Gulch had gone missing after that tornado had hit. Toto was back safe with Dorothy and Miss Gulch was gone. And Dorothy always wondered if the evil witch that she destroyed with a bucket of water in Oz was the one and the same Miss Gulch who never returned.
In the end Dorothy doesn’t often think about that yellow brick road or the adventures she had on it. She unconsciously made a decision with that first step, whether it was real or imagined doesn’t really matter anymore.
