There's some sense here, but I don't entirely agree. The counter-argument is that, if you're reading books after work anyway, you might as well get a degree out of it.

I think most of the arguments about PhDs apply within the States: not a criticism, but an observation.

Its true, Europeans do seem to respect Ph.D.s more than Americans do.

If you are going into a particular field that has pretty specific requirements (*cough*diplomacy*cough*), then it probably makes more sense than other grad schools. However, you'd better be damned sure that it's what you want. Otherwise, you're wasting your time and your money.
