Five years ago when I moved to Japan I ended up taking in a stray kitten. Now I am leaving Japan to move to the UK and am unable to take him with me. There's this pet shop in the town where I work that is really making me mad. They only do small animals, but they've got 3 fully grown rabbits stuffed in a hamster cage so the rabbits can't even turn around properly. No hopping space whatsoever. I haven't been to a pet shop in Japan that wasn't absolutely wretched.  Actually, they usually leave me depressed for days.  For those that haven't been: "Designer" puppies and kittens crowded together in little pins with nothing but a bit of shredded newspaper to (not) soak up the droppings, smaller birds crowded together in  tupperware containers ( Read more... )

Last night we get home and find the scruffy stray cat "Kori" there to greet us.  She's particularly chatty so we sit down and talk to her a bit and eventually she lets us pet her.  Wow! Does any one know of any pet friendly hotels that exsit in Tokyo? I've called all that are listed as pet friendly and all have said either they are not or only allow dogs, which is weird. Any one know of any places in Tokyo or near Narita airport that are pet friendly, specificly for cats?

Does anyone know about the process of bringing pets, specifically cats, to Japan? I am not there yet and even once I go I probably won't be able to bring her right away but eventually I would like to bring my cat to stay with me in Japan. In order for me to take my cat back to the US my family insists that the cat be declawed and neutered. I've called around and can't really find places to declaw him. I looked online and saw something about it being illegal in Japan but I called two animal hospitals and they said they did it but for 500 bucks for the declawing. Can anyone recommend ( Read more... )
