It's a glorious contradiction - how a person can have so much shame, and yet be completely shameless.
I love the talk about Spike and shame that's been going on lately. I think it's one of the reasons I admire-cringe at him. He's so highly emotional and volatile, but he let's it out, and lives it in a way that usually isn't damaging to everyone around him, yet he really doesn't hold back. As you say, he's usually the one who comes off the fool. It's not till this damages those ge loves that he even considers changing. It just doesn't work like that in RL. Relationships get too damaged (course, his did- he got lucky by being with vamps for so long), but he burns so bright before crashing with smoke, it's beautiful to watch.
I think it's one of the reasons I admire-cringe at him.
ADMIRE-CRINGE. PERFECT VERB COMBO. That is exactly what it is. He is such a fool. I love him unreservedly because he's fiction, but in reality I think I'd react to him the same way that Buffy does. (Maybe this is where my Buffy-identification comes from?? *g*) Still, at the same time - beautiful disaster. I mean, how can you not envy that.
I think the fact that Spike fucks up a hella lot is a big part of why I like him. I didn't like Angel until he started fucking up a hella lot on his own show (especially in humorous ways).
I was thinking about why I hate Amends, aside from the sap and the magical Christmas snow - and I think it's because Angel does, in fact, give up. He does! He only decides his life is worth living when the PtB send snow. And how many of get divine intervention telling us our lives are worth living when we feel like they're full of suck?
Later, Angel will become the guy who doesn't stop fighting, ever. And I'll like him.
Spike is *always* that guy. And part of that is because he clings to delusion like whoa, but, man, you gotta live for something. It's no mistake that the guy finds clarity and purpose in getting his fists bloodied up. The fact that he's fighting is what gives him meaning. So yeah, he fucks up. He fucks up a lot. But he can't give up, because the end goal isn't even the point. It's all about the struggle, yo.
Oh, Spike. Favorite boy ever. Character I identify with. The one I always get.
I feel like I won't really have anything insightful to say about any of your posts during this meme because I just agree so hard and love so much the way you phrase things that all I can really does is flail and shout, "Yes! YES! EXACTLY!"
