I feel you on this. There’s nothing I love more than a genuinely good pop song, but everything’s lazy dance music featuring zero actual instruments right now. I listened to NPR’s reviewer RIP APART Justin Timberlake’s new album yesterday, and I had to agree that even he can’t manage to make good pop music anymore. (Btw, if you haven’t listened to any Brown Eyed Girls yet, DO IT. Queens of R&B-tinged pop music, I swear.)
the inexplicable prettiness of all the dudes, i assumed that the band itself didn't actually possess any talent.
Inexplicable prettiness is right, but there’s a stupid amount of talent in this band, scattered across various genres. Sungjong makes a talent of androgyny and genderfuckery. Which CLEARLY every boy band needs, lbr.

The IS2 was a one-off they filmed while he was doing solo promotions. I LOVE THEIR VOICES TOGETHER SO MUCH. AND THEIR FACES UGH.

YAY! I remember watching the first two episodes of RK and thinking, "What is this? This is not good. What a disappointment." But then the rest of the show happened and now it's one of the happiest things in my life. And I understand your sentimental SP reactions. I rewatch SP episodes randomly ALL THE TIME because it's one of my happy places. I don't remember who it was, but one of my friends was like, "But what is SP about?" IT'S ABOUT NOTHING.
