Beer is disgusting. Why Lincoln would ever have convinced his friends to give him beer for
his birthday is beyond Michael. A lot is beyond him right now though... he almost fell over
during his last trip to the refrigerator.
I wonder when Lincoln is going to get home. he thinks vaguely. He starts to wonder if
drinking Lincoln's birthday present is a good way to get revenge on him for leaving him alone
for a week but pushes it out of his mind and struggles to open another bottle of the
foul-smelling liquid.
---
It feels like someone dropped a piano on his head from a few stories up. It sound like it too,
now that he thinks about it.
Michael tries to figure out where he is. Certainly, it's too bright to still be their run-down
apartment in the worst neighborhood in town... but he can't think where else he might be.
A figure starts to materialize out of the bright haze and picks him up from the floor.
Maybe I'm dead, and this is an angel come to tell me that I'm in heaven. he thinks hopefully.
Then he passes out again.
---
Lincoln doesn't know whether to be worried, angry, or sad. At this point, he figures anger
will have to do, because he's not ready for the responsibilty that comes with worry or sadness.
He just spent an entire evening with Veronica and his friends celebrating his birthday, and when
he comes home to celebrate with his brother, he finds him passed out on the floor with three
bottles of beer sitting on what passes for them as a coffee table.
If he was honest with himself, he would know why Michael did it... Michael always tried something
when Lincoln got back from being away, even when it was just one night. Anger, however, is much
easier than admitting to himself that he's being a terrible older brother and a bad role model.
Lincoln picks his brother up and carries him to the bed. He realizes with a small amount of surprise
that he's actually not angry with Michael at all. When he tries to shake his brother awake, his hand
instead pulls the covers up over the sleeping boy.
When he wakes up in the morning, they are going to have to have a talk... Michael needs to
undetstand that no matter how angry he gets at Lincoln, he needs to stay away from the alcohol.
He'll tell his friends that he is mad because he drank the beer, but that's not the real reason.
Michael can get angry, he can cry, he can refuse to talk to Lincoln, but the last thing they need is for
Michael to end up in the hospital. Lincoln might be a shitty brother and a bad role model, but he is
all Michael has, and Michael is the only person that Lincoln cares about more than himself.
"It won't always be like this, Michael." he whispers to the sleeping boy.
"I'll figure out how to get you out of this Hell-hole if it's the last thing I do."
Comments and constructive(!) criticism are welcome. This is my first fic, and it's not beta'd... but I think it's at least acceptable.
