Young squirrels seem to also have the 'mind-blowing stupid'/'suicidal little thrillseeker' genes. I've always boggled when one that was near the edge of the road runs the *OTHER WAY* across the entire road when a car comes..

Did I not say the only deer I've hit is when I was doing a reasonable speed in a residential neighborhood with deer whistles on the car?

Running is a deer's best option in its normal habitat; it's the instinct which first kicks in when it's around a threat. Doesn't translate well when it's trying to merge in and out of traffic; suddenly, it's the slowest thing around. Nimble but stupid. Instinctive but not intelligent. And the next thing you know; bang-zoom, deer chutney.

The deer I've come across this winter have been extremely slow to react and slow to move, unlike the previous winters. They haven't even been very perky. I have to wonder if they're getting the cervine version of CJD or something.
