Sickbay - Day 24 [open/unfinished]

Nov 25, 2009 10:04

Occasional fun and games aside, this was a working shore leave. Ship and crew had to get whipped back into shape after the business with the Spores. Sickbay certainly needed a good taking down and putting back to rights. The requisition list for new or repaired equipment was shockingly long, the shopping list for supplies even longer. And the ( Read more... )

Reuben stood in the back of the small group of new medical staff with his arms crossed and leaned up against the wall. He listened closely to every word that his new boss said as he scanned the crowd. To be honest he felt sort of old with all the young kids around him. McCoy finished his little speech and no one moved. Reuben sighed as he pushed off the wall and walked up to the front of the group. “Now let’s not all rush up here at once,” he mumbled before turning his full attention on the doctor. “Lieutenant Tyler reporting sir,” Reuben smirked slightly. Reuben was a cocky son of a bitch and did his best to act to cool for school, even now he had his sleeves rolled up to the elbow and was being totally nonchalant. That was also because it was just his nature to be laid back, stressing never did anything but give him gray.

Leonard liked to think he was a good judge of character. Despite an... occasionally gruff exterior, he liked people in general enough to make a study of them. And being a friend of a character like Jim, well, Leonard knew a smart ass when he saw one. Like also spoke to like. But he also sensed the same rebellious streak he'd once seen in Jim, before the man had found his focus in life. Calling up Tyler's personnel file on PADD after a nod and muttered, "Lieutenant, welcome aboard," only confirmed his suspicions. Words like 'reckless', 'insubordinate', and 'brilliant' jumped out boldly for Leonard's eye to catch.

Oh good, one of those. Because things like Spores and Medbay brawls weren't exciting enough.

Well, best to start off on a good foot. He kept it professional. "Dr. Tyler, at that. Recent graduate from Starfleet Medical. Your first real assignment, eh? Well, we just lost a doctor. You can have her shift after you've trained with me. 'Til then, hope you're a morning bird." Not that Leonard had ever been. "Any

Reuben was not used to being called a doctor, to be honest he’d never wanted to be a doctor but Starfleet Medical had made him one. He was a medic, the guy that came out to crash sites to keep you alive so that the real doctors could save you. Reuben wasn’t a doctor by his own definition but whatever the Fleet put on his file was what he was going to be now. But he didn’t show any weakness like that, instead he tilted his chin up as if he was proud of the title.

“Morning, afternoon, anytime really Doctor McCoy,” he shrugged. Having had the great chance to have training before this he also got to learn how the medical shift worked in Starfleet and outside of it. Plus he was always the one pulling doubles and triples and more if he could. He thanked his father for the talent to be able to stay up for four day straight without losing his edge.”I wouldn’t say first real assignment, sir, just my first with Starfleet. And just one question, can ya call me Rabbit? Or are we going to have to go with titles?”

He'd been half-listening, entering data about shift detail, report status, and training schedules. So the comment about rabbits caught him some by surprise. Leonard looked up, blinked, quickly thought back over what the man had just been saying. Snorted. "'Rabbit', eh? Well, we all in the 'Bay here get a little informal at times. I'll try to remember that one, when the occasion's appropriate." Didn't think he'd likely forget, with a name like that. Paused, then finally took the bait. "So why 'Rabbit', of all things?"

Well, after 'Rabbit' had gone, people seemed to fall in line. Leonard got three more people checked in and assigned duties before he came across a shy-looking thing. A nurse, going on the uniform. Feeling very out of her element, going on how she tugged at said uniform. Putting on one of his nicer smiles, Leonard asked her, "Name, please?" He could afford to be nice on the first day. Lord knows she'd be seeing attitude from him sooner or later.

"Welcome aboard...," Leonard quickly consulted his PADD, "Ensign Smith. Fresh outta Medical too? Well, glad to have ya. Says here you aced pretty much everything they threw at ya. That kinda talent will definitely be put to work here. Could use that on second shift. I'm gonna stick you with our Head Nurse, Christine Chapel, for training purposes. Then we'll see about permanent assignment. Any questions?"

It wasn't until all the other new comers to the ship had gone leaving the red uniformed woman in the back working away at a PADD that Tonia realized she might as well break the news to McCoy. While the Yeoman working in the departments had been told that it would be a few more months before rotation, after the spore incident, many had requested to be moved out to other areas or the ship or had left all together. Spots needed to be filled and with them being docked why was there a need to wait?

Tonia was going to miss engineering greatly promising Scotty that she wasn't going to stop visiting him down there on her off days or when she had a chance to make a run. Of course it all depended upon the CMO and Head Nurse as to her hours and shifts now. Glancing up from her work the Yeoman all but slyly made her way toward McCoy before he could get back to work himself. "Hey, Doc. I guess Christmas is coming early for you."

Leonard assigned his last shift and assessed the rotation schedules for Sickbay now. Unfortunately, there were still a few gaps he'd like better filled. But what could he do? This was a starbase, not the Academy. There was a finite number of personnel they were going to be able to spare, especially with medical training. Doctors and nurses were always in high demand.

Well... he guessed he could pull in another shift until the next set of transfers. Not like Leonard didn't send most of his time in Sickbay already. Would just need to come out of his office a bit more.

He wasn't expecting to see Tonia's smiling face over his PADD. His own went from a frown to a grin as he looked up. "Well, if Santa's brought me a visit from you, I'll pull out the spiked 'nog an' call it Yuletide. What can I do for ya, Tonia?"

"Better than that I would think. Seems you've been a good boy this year, Doc. I've been assigned as your Yeoman for this rotation. Well- more like for medical in general, but I'll be working closely with you, M'Benga, and Christine as the senior staff." His grin was infections. The smile that she had placed upon her own face was soon turning wide before a little giggle slipped up.

There was a little glint already in her eyes. "I hope you don't mind, but I've already started going through the prior paperwork that's been filed making sure everything was in its proper place with the documentation that's needed for Fleet Command." And in case that got her a look or even the hint of protest, the woman was quick to add. "It's just standard procedure for any rotation changes. Shouldn't take me more than a day to sift through."

What Leonard liked about Tonia -- besides her being as cute as a button -- was her friendly, bubbly attitude. She'd have made a great nurse, one of those rare ones that put you at ease, even when putting you on the biobed. But according to her, looked like he just might have the chance to put some of her shine in Sickbay's sky ( ... )
