Why I have never cosplayed

Sometimes I'll think about cosplaying, or at least dressing up as a character I like. I don't have much practice with sewing or an eye for design, and I don't have a lot of money to burn, so I usually come up with something that would be more or less just a matter of finding the right clothes. But then I look at all those pictures of amazing ( Read more... )

Solution, cosplay genre not character. Then whatever you wear, that's the right costume for your Original Character. You could even cosplay an O.C from a specfic fandom, and still be ok as long as you're within the aproximate style of the costumes for whatever universe.

Besides, it's more fun coming up with your own stuff.

Or come as yourself in that universe, who you would be if you lived there. Then it can be both your own style, and in keeping with the aesthetic.

Not a bad idea, considering I think about that sort of thing a lot anyway.

This is a great idea. It might be a little difficult because my two main fandoms are basically genre parodies (Discworld and The Venture Bros), so I'd end up looking like a generic witch or supervillain. But the supervillain one, at least, could be fun, and people would still ask who I was...

Definitely worth considering. Thank you.

Both of the above suggestions are good. The reason that the Amazing Cosplayers get so many pictures taken of them is that they're so rare - if you're recognizable, you're good. I do a decent Eleventh Doctor, and I don't do makeup.

The above suggestions are great, and something to think about for the future! But I also kind of wanted someone to tell me to just go ahead and dress up as Dean Venture and fuck the haters. But it's getting a little late to get the costume components together anyway, so maybe next year...

Sadly, there were no red sweater vests at Goodwill. Depending on how I feel on Monday, I might make the trek to the Davis Square Goodwill (which seems to be the largest around), but it might have to wait until next year. Oh, well.
