yes...well it is a little different, but then the two TV shows were always a little different too.... Anyway I will be mailing you this Angel episode next week, and I think you'll like (or maybe you'll just tolerate it but Spike is returning in Angel's issue #2!) It is huge fun....
and this is really an intense sequel, you know that Joss had plans for Angel's 6th season and was upset that it was canceled... but the advantage of comic books (along with all the millions of disadvantages) is that they can do stuff they could NEVER afford to do for TV, it would even be a budget buster for a major motion picture!
Sorry this is a really late reply to the post but I only just found your LJ. We haunt many of the same places - Whedonesque, in particular. I am loving the AtS: After The Fall series a great deal. Lynch can really write in a way that is very sympathetic to Joss' style of writing.
That was always my issue with the old BtVS comics (not S8, of course) - they were the characters that I knew, doing the things I could have imagined them doing but it was so totally out of whack with how Joss would have written it that it just jarred too much.
of course, feel free to add me, but I'm afraid I'm pretty boring....
And I really agree about the old Buffy comics, I tried to read them occasionally and found them out of character, with terrible dialog, and lame plots. The only exceptions (IMO) were the few Jane Espenson wrote (one about Jonathan and a two parter about Willow and Tara), hers were delightful.
But of course back then Joss was writing 'Fray', which was great, and came out with the 'Tales of the Slayers' and the 'Tales of the Vampires' (which I also loved). So there were still some vaguely 'Buffyverse' comics worth reading.
Similarly the early Angel comics for IDW were bad (again, just IMO), but I enjoyed a couple of the 'Spotlights'. And then along came Brian Lynch with 'Spike Asylum' and that just blew me away! I am so glad Joss decided to trust Brian with the 'Angel' canon continuation because I always knew that Joss had thoughts about where he would take the story next, and I hate for Joss to have stories that I can't be told!
