30... that's supposed to matter, right?

Nov 07, 2008 15:18

At 5:28 AM this morning I turned 30.

Some folks have rolled their eyes and pointed out that 30 is only round in base 10 counting systems, it's not a magic number. Others have asked me how I feel about this life marker.

So how do I feel? )

pagan, health, school, identity

Exactly.

I think a lot of it is just how much our world has changed since the previous generation told us what to expect, you know?

I find myself worrying that if this trend continues, far too many women won't be ready to raise kids until after it's too late to bear them :(

But there are cultures, I'm told, where kids are raised by grandparents for pretty much this reason, only not in quite the same way - that is, young inexperienced but healthy folks have kids, older, mature, experienced people raise them.

That makes sense...

our whole family is raising my niece. my sister (she's 44 this year) spends a lot of time working, so my mom takes care of my niece most of the time. there are days when it's just me and her and we have a great time. she's very much her own person with bits and sprinkles of each one of us thrown in.

FWIW, I counted both 30 and 35 as age benchmarks.

Happy Birthday!

You're not allowed to call yourself "old" because that would have unfortunate implications for ME, and it's all about me. ;)

I don't think of "old" as having any meaning in an absolute sense anyway, so I'm not inclined to label myself thus.

Perspective is everything in this kind of pondering. Judging by what I would have expected of myself when I turned 30, 35 and soon to be 40, I am not at all where I thought I would be. Compared to people like my parents and grandparents, I am even further off. When I look at it without those rulers, I remember all the work that went into getting where I am today and know that those expectations are outdated and based on a profound lack of information and experience. But, hey, I get mistaken for younger all the time, and you will continue to in the context where it makes sense.

Happy Birthday!
Don't forget that I have a gift for you, so let's arrange a time for you to receive it soon.

I haven't forgotten! Um, the most likely place will be Dicken's Faire, unless you're in the South Bay sometime soon...

No day involving pots of melted cheese and melted chocolate is ever JUST another day!
