I'm editing a novel for my friend, and it's making me want to bang my head against the wall so much. I'm amazed (and appalled) that she can have a MASSIVE amount of commas and still not have any in the correct places. And the semicolons, oh, the semicolons. If I never see another one, it'll be too soon! I don't know what a normal amount is, but so ( Read more... )

:(, writing novels is hard, *head desk*

Did she read it before giving it to you? I know it's not quite the same, but I have a coworker who always tells me something is done then there are a bazillion errors, including VERY obvious ones. When I ask if he edited his own work before giving it to me, he then admits he hasn't.

It annoys the shit out of me because a) he does it often and hasn't caught on yet, and b) it takes me out of reviewing big picture things bc I'm spending so much time worrying about typos and commas ... Which I'm sure you're doing now lol!

Oh, yeah, she has. She just sucks at punctuation. It's the same mistakes over and over again. After 4000 of them, I'm just tired of it!

I'm sorry you have to deal with your coworker's BS on a consistent basis. Do you ever want to beat him over the head with a grammar textbook? :D

I can't imagine what it looked like before she reviewed it! LOL. Maybe in the future, if it's the same mistakes ... give her a few suggestions on it then ask her to fix it all herself before you look at it again? That way she can learn what the mistakes are and let you look at a more complete draft?

Last night I was reviewing a doc he worked on, that our boss had given him direction on. There were GLARING mistakes that assured me he never went through it himself before sending it to me. I was so frustrated that I immediately emailed my boss with examples of what was wrong and then gave him a bit of a strong reply to his email about what all had to be fixed and how bad the mistakes were. UGH.

I don't think she'll ever understand the role of the comma or semicolon! I swear most of my comments about her switching POV too often and little things like show, don't tell. (Stuff I learned through fandom and writing fanfic. Who says fanfic is useless? :p)

Grrr. How annoying. It's so frustrating when coworkers don't do shit that's part of their jobs. *glares at him*

Thank you! It's been tough, but I will conquer all the commas if it's the last thing I do! :D

Hahaha... oh dear. I can't believe you're still going with that! Good luck with the remaining pages. You can do it! *waves pom poms*.

Other areas of life are absolutely shithouse right now, and I'm really sorry that the same is going for you too. I hope the universe sorts it shit out soon, because I am so tired of trying to roll with the punches.

Hope you're okay - big hugs from over the pond!

The boys are talking in my head again and poking me, like "Why aren't you telling our story?" so that's a good sign.

I'm sorry, bb. Situation with D still crappy? I'm okay. Other things are not so good, but I'll get through it.

LOL. Grammar and whatnot have always been easy for me so I often forget that not everyone understands the rules. I'm a grammar nazi. I can't help it!

I got a few hundred words. It's better than nothing, I guess.
