Summary: AU. The kids made a special surprise for Jared and Jensen.
A/N 1: Continuation of my
college!AU. Going back in time for this one. The kids are about 10 and 11. Another Jensen POV.
Jensen was lying in bed, ticked at being awake so early, when he heard a scuffling out in the hallway- a scraping noise followed by clinking.
“Shh. Carter, be quiet! We don’t want them up yet!” Gracie hissed loudly.
“You be quiet,” Carter answered petulantly, and Jensen bit his lip to keep from laughing.
“Your kids are terrible at sneaking around,” he told Jared. Jensen’s eyes weren’t open yet, but he knew Jared was awake- the hand that had been resting slack on Jensen’s hip was lightly skimming back and forth along his side now. Jensen sighed contentedly, shifting closer to Jared’s large, warm body. He’d been hoping to go back to sleep for another couple hours, but it didn’t look like that would happen.
“Good. That’ll make it easier when they’re teenagers then,” Jared said, his voice rough with sleep.
Jensen snorted, then shivered as Jared’s hand slid up his spine to grasp the back of his neck. He finally opened his eyes to find Jared smiling softly at him. Jared pulled him in for a brief kiss, the thumb of his free hand sweeping gently over Jensen’s cheekbone.
“Morning,” Jared murmured, brushing another kiss to Jensen’s mouth, longer this time.
Jensen nuzzled against Jared’s jaw. He loved the rasp of Jared’s stubble against his skin. “Morning.”
“How awake are you?”
“M’not,” Jensen mumbled, and Jared laughed softly, stroking Jensen’s cheekbone some more.
Jensen laid a palm over Jared’s heart and closed his eyes again, settling back into the covers. Waking up with Jared next to him every morning was the only thing that made him less grumpy about getting up before noon, but he still wasn’t moving until he had to. Jared kissed him on the nose, and Jensen huffed in annoyance. Jared ignored him and did it again.
“What do you think-”
Jared was interrupted by another loud hiss right outside their door.
“Carter! You were supposed to put it on a plate!” Gracie complained.
“Sorry!” Carter replied, though he sounded anything but.
“Ugh. Whatever. Come on.”
Jared buried his head in Jensen’s shoulder, stifling his laughter. His whole body was shaking from trying to hold it in, which didn’t help Jensen contain his own laughter. He bit his lip again and smacked Jared’s arm. Their kids really did suck at sneaking around.
“Hush. We shouldn’t let them know we’re up,” Jensen suggested.
Jared calmed down with effort and shifted back onto his own pillow. “What do you think they’re up to?” he asked.
“No clue. Hopefully they’re not destroying the house.”
They feigned sleep and luckily didn’t have much longer to wait to see what all the fuss was about. The door banged open, and Carter bounded in, jumping on the bed between them and bouncing.
“Daddy! Papa! Wake up! Wake up, wake up, wake up!” he yelled excitedly.
“Go away!” Jared bellowed, but the amusement was plain in his voice.
“Come on, Daddy! Get up!”
Growling, Jensen grabbed him around the waist, and Carter cut off with a squeak. “Who’s trying to wake me up before noon?” he demanded, tickling Carter in the vulnerable spot under his arm. Carter giggled, then sat back when Jensen released him, red-faced and hair a complete mess, not unlike the bird’s nest Jared was currently sporting.
“You have to get up,” Gracie insisted from over by the door.
“Me ’n Gracie have a surprise for you!” Carter added. Jensen wiggled his fingers at him, and Carter scrambled into Jared’s lap, but he was grinning.
“Ooh, a surprise! I guess that’s okay then.” Jared said and ruffled Carter’s hair, messing it up even more.
Gracie approached the bed slowly, carefully carrying various plates and bowls on what looked suspiciously like the bottom of their old hamster cage. Jensen just hoped they’d cleaned it first, since it’d been in the garage for God knew how long.
“It’s breakfast in bed!” she announced proudly, beaming, and Jensen’s heart constricted.
“Me ‘n Gracie did all ourselves!” Carter blurted. His was practically wriggling in place in his excitement.
“Oh, wow, guys. That’s awesome!” Jared told them, hugging Carter.
“Yeah, guys. Thanks.” Jensen took a look at the tray, and his face paled. Nothing was exactly recognizable as breakfast food, except the whipped cream-covered waffles, and he dreaded having to actually eat any of it. Still, the kids had obviously spent a lot of time and effort doing this for them. He could never disappoint them, so he’d suck it up and choke everything down, and he knew Jared would do the same. “But what’s the occasion?”
“It’s Father’s Day!” Gracie replied in exasperation, rolling her eyes. She came forward and slid the tray onto Jensen’s lap. It didn’t look any more appetizing up close.
“You guys are awesome! Come on up here, Gracie,” Jared requested with a giant smile.
“’Kay.”
She crawled up onto the bed and gave each of them a hug. Jensen kissed the top of her head. She and Carter still wore their pajamas, various substances spilled all over them. He wondered how they’d gotten anything done; they weren’t much taller than the counters, since they’d had them built a little higher to accommodate for Jared’s freaky height.
“This looks-ooh, waffles!” Jared exclaimed, reaching out to swipe a finger full of whipped cream. Of course, he went for the only edible thing there. Jensen batted his hand away, but Jared gave him the puppy eyes, so he ended up handing Jared a fork so Jared could dig into the waffles.
The kids sat between them while they ate, happily chattering about random things and asking constantly if he and Jared liked the food. They lied and said yes, of course. Gracie and Carter’s answering smiles were totally worth it. Their breakfast wasn’t all bad, thankfully. There was orange juice and congealed cereal and halfway decent toast, something that vaguely resembled bacon and cold hash browns, as well as a heap of blueberry waffles. It looked like they’d cooked everything in the microwave or toaster, which Jensen was grateful for. They knew they weren’t allowed near the oven, and he’d hate to punish the kids for making them a surprise. Between the two of them, he and Jared managed to eat most of it, only leaving the worst of it and claiming they were full.
Jensen found some paper stuffed under the toast plate- homemade Father’s Day cards, one each from Gracie and Carter for both of them. Gracie’s were neater, and it was obvious she’d helped Carter with the spelling on his, but they were all perfect, as far as Jensen was concerned.
“Thank you, guys. That was really great,” Jensen told Gracie and Carter, and they beamed at him.
“All right, time to get dressed,” Jared informed them to a chorus of groans. “But first,” he paused, dramatically, then exclaimed, “GROUP HUG!”
Scooping both kids into his arms, Jared fell sideways against Jensen, making it impossible to avoid the group hug. Not that he wanted to. Gracie and Carter, smooshed between them, giggled and squirmed and shouted that they couldn’t breathe, while he and Jared showered them with random kisses. Eventually, though, they really couldn’t breathe from laughing so much.
They sent the kids off to get dressed, then quietly padded into the kitchen to inspect the damage. It wasn’t as bad as Jensen had expected, but the place was still a disaster.
“Damn,” he muttered, gazing around the room with his hands on his hips. “This is gonna be a bitch to clean up.”
“So we have them help. No big deal,” Jared replied casually.
“Jared-”
Jared stepped up behind him and wrapped his arms around Jensen’s waist. “It’s worth it. We have damned awesome kids, Jensen, and it’s worth a messy kitchen.”
Okay, yeah, that was true. He’d take horrendously inedible breakfasts in bed over a lot of problems other parents dealt with.
Jensen smiled as Jared kissed the side of his neck. He reached back to thread his hand into Jared’s tangled hair and turned his head to kiss him properly.
This was the best Father’s Day ever.
