Toy Story 3, from an SFnal perspective...

On the other hand, as much as I enjoyed Toy Story 3, I couldn't help but wince at the entire premise. As someone who has spent a lot of time thinking about the consequences of free will, agency, and creatures with different goals from those of we evolved, the story comes across as more of a horror story and a cautionary tale ( Read more... )

It's been a while since I watched the first movie, but I thought the whole "non-animated in the presence of people" was more of a toy conspiracy or "religous taboo" than some actual force of non-animation.

I saw this brought up in another thread, but it's worth repeating.

One has to wonder what future AIs will think of Pixar, and the Toy Story series in particular.

With any luck, we'll get to ask them ourselves.

Toy Story 1 did touch upon this theme quite a lot actually. It was Buzz Lightyear's introduction that threatened Woody's status as king of the hill.
