Winter came back for the Election Day

Mar 18, 2007 22:38

The day of the parliamentary election begun with -3 degrees Celsius and sunshine. It ended with the fall of wet snow.

Actually, these were centennial elections, after one hundred years of Finnish parliamentary elections. Yes, we had the first election before the independence.

Damn! I wish I could have been there, just to see your facial expressions to that "tapping". *giggles by herself*
But honestly, you could run for the parliament. It would be nice to have a candidate whom I trust.
...BTW...did you know that our mutual friend AP has been asked to run for the parliament for a number of times... and by several different parties...? Naturally, she's declined every time. She'd make a good MP but then she'd be unable to do all her other stuff :(

Maybe I shouldn't go on rambling here...

Here's a question. I see that "svenska folkpartiet" (naturally the only party Swedes really care about ,-) ) gets more seats than the christian democrats despite having fewer votes. Is it because of some sort of difference in the size of districts or because the sfp's are considerably much stronger in some districts? Do you have links to maps?

It's mainly about the districts (thought sometimes electoral alliances affect the result as well; In a smaller district a candidate can get elected with smaller amount of votes. Chairwoman of the Green League received over 7000 votes but that was not enough for re-election in her district. The smallest amount of votes was about 1700 for newcomer Sari Palm who did get elected.

Svenska Folkpartiet usually has at least one representative in every district but their central area is in the western part of Finland, especially around Vasa, where the local districts are smaller.

Unfortunately I could not find any good graphics.

Tilastokeskus (Statistics Finland) has some very good and informative databases about the results. But I am not sure if they have recent results ready yet. But I was able to find some very good info (thanks to twindouble's advie) about 2003 elections from there.

Thanks. Fascinating that a party with less than 5% of the total votes still is so regionally strong - around Vasa it seems as they have consistently above 50% of the votes. Ethnopolitics.
