kids' benadryl warning

Apr 05, 2009 20:00

I bought some children's Benadryl to give Lacey for her itchiness. On the back, a warning says Do not use to make a child sleepy. Darn it. My plans are foiled!

Do you have a kid? Once you do, you understand the temptation.

I've heard tons of parents joking about doing this, and a small number of them actually doing it. In fact, I'm pretty sure my own parents did so a few times. Earlier generations gave kids a bit of whisky or brandy to calm them down to sleep--it's basically the same thing.

I think there is a non-drowsy version of Benadryl. Oy... I wouldn't want to be sleepy now *grin*

As long as it doesn't mention dogs, you're in the clear. The warning labels these days crack me up. Some disposable lighters used to say "Do not use near fire or flame". How confusing!

I've had friends' vets and my mom's vet say small amounts of benadryl are ok for dogs. Yet since Lacey's only 12 lbs, I got the kids med. She's ok so far :)

Oh yeah, I think it's fine for them. My oldest niece has used it for years when her older dog needs it. So help me, that dog gets better medical care than most people, lol.

I was just imagining them putting a warning for dogs on the label, too! :)
