Mai opened the door after a few moments. She had been setting up the shogi board and starting some tea. It was polite to offer tea.

"Are you Faye?" She asked, her tone sounding mostly indifferent.

"They are the ones who can bend. Fire benders are from my land, the Fire Nation. There are also water benders, earth benders, and there were air benders, but only the Avatar is left of them." Mai said as she got out the cups. "They control the element of their nation."

Faye stared at her. "Okay, none of that made any sense to me. What the hell is bending? Controlling elements... is that magic?"

"It appears to be magic, but benders say it's not magic." Mai said and shrugged. "I am not a bender. Zuko, Azula, or Toph are better suited to explain how it works."

Faye thought this over. "So... a bender can manipulate a certain element? Like, move it around and stuff?" She thought about this some more. Interesting, she thought. "I don't think I've met any of them," she continued. "What sorts of benders are they?"

"Yes." Mai said. "The element has to be present in some way or they can't use their element. Azula and Zuko are fire benders. Toph is an earth bender."

Faye committed these names to memory. Toph, huh, she thought, a satisfied smirky smile spreading across her face. "...Bending," she said musingly, her smirk widening further. "...That's really cool~."

"It's one of the most prized traits in all the lands." Mai said, pouring the tea when the kettle back to whistle.

"I can see why," replied Faye with a small smile. She tilted her head, honestly curious. "But not everyone's a bender... is it genetic? Uh... I mean, hereditary? Runs in family lines, or something?"

"Usually benders give birth to other benders." Mai said. "But there ar times when families with no benders at all will have a bender." She added, carrying out the tray of tea.

"Huh. ...Recessive trait, maybe..." Faye said, mostly to herself. She leaned back in her chair as Mai came back with the tray. "Thanks for the tea," she said.

"Most say it's who the spirits determine deserve the trait." Mai said as she took a seat across from Faye, picking up a teacup and taking a sip.

Faye raised an eyebrow, then looked thoughtful. "Suppose you'd know better than I would. Spirits don't determine jack where I come from, but from what I've seen here... hell, why not?" She picked up her cup of tea and took a careful sip, making a small, appreciative "mmm" in the back of her throat. The hot liquid felt wonderful. She preferred coffee, but tea was... homey. My mother used to make tea like this, thought Faye, then frowned slightly and stomped on the thought.

"Zhao almost killed the moon. Spirits are quite apparent in our world." Mai said, setting down the cup. "Shall we play?"

Faye's eyebrows went up. "Killed the moon? ...You can kill the moon?!" She blinked and stared for a few moments, then shook her had, bewildered. "...Well, there you go, as I said... you'd know better than I would. I'm fairly sure our moon's never been alive."

She took another sip and set down her own cup, grinning. "Yes, let's~. ...Have you put any more thought into playing for stakes~? Or would you rather just play this game for the sake of playing?"

"You can kill the moon spirit and it messes with what the moon does." Mai answered. It was a bit hard to explain, but it did have an affect on the waterbenders according to the reports.

"Sake of playing. We can add stake later."
