i got two e-mails tonight reporting that one of my applications has actually been forwarded to the selection committee for once! of course, i think one or two of my other applications were actually given to the selection committees (and then rejected), but no one bothered to tell me before. so, it's not necessarily a good sign, but it at least ( Read more... )

A vibration that's worse at highway speeds? Is it noticeable when you're idling and not moving? If not, then it sounds more like a wheel (or two) are out of balance. Very easy and cheap fix. A bearing? Not likely, since the clunk or thunk noise it makes on turns is very telling. Engine mount? If it vibrates or chatters very loudly at idle, then that's possible. Kind of surprising, as those are parts that don't often go bad. Engine mounts should be pretty easy and cheap to fix.

My money is on an out of balance wheel. Not too unusual during the winters back there.

If there's someone back there you can bum rides from to get moving supplies and such for a month, then perhaps not having a car is okay for that short term? I'm assuming, naturally, you have some sort of public transport option?

Congrats on the job whiff!

i considered the out of balance wheel, but considering that i think the problem started while the car was parked... i guess it's possible that i did it during the "rocking", though. the front corner on the passenger side was pretty well braced by the snow drift. i'll take it in ASAP, and let the mechanics figure it out. it doesn't really do anything at idle, but the whole car shimmies when i start her.

see, that's the problem...there isn't anyone i can bum rides from. they're all gone. i'm the last one here. my friends still here either don't have cars or are so busy that trying to work out rides would be a nightmare. sure, there's public transportation. can you see me lugging packages of boxes and packing paper around by bus? 'cuz, yeah, i can barely grocery shop by bus.

thank you. : )

It is always nice to know that at least a real live decision making person is looking at your resume/application. Good Luck!

GS-9 and GS-11 are "General Schedule" levels 9 and 11...salary ranges for government jobs in the States. they also indicate the knowledge and experience required for a given job. for example, to be a GS-11 you either have to have several years of experience or a PhD. there's several 'steps' within each pay grade that a person can go through without being promoted to the next level.

i just bet you're not. ; P
