My son makes those paper video games, too! He's kinda obsessed with games, so when I tell him to go do something that doesn't involve a screen, he ends up either talking someone's ear off about whatever game he was just playing, writing stories about his adventures in video games, or making board games that are pretty much video games on paper.
As for the whole confidence/motivation thing, I think a lot of creative people struggle with that, especially when they're on the brink of doing something that could be really good. If it helps, maybe just concentrate on making it something you would enjoy, and try not to think about how well received or successful it would be when it's done. Your instincts on it are probably right.
