You are exactly correct about 3rd-party candidates. Once the choices for the election were Hillary or the Cheeto (an insult to Cheetos, IMO), there was really only one right choice. If didn't vote, or you voted for the Cheeto, you pretty much deserve all the shit that rains down on you. If you voted for a 3rd party candidate, you deserve some of that shit too, and the added pleasure of knowing how delusional you were to think that your "protest" vote would make a difference. If you voted for Hillary, yep, she has some serious problems, but she's not gonna destroy the world. The Cheeto, I'm still not so sure.
I have exactly zero sympathies for all the downtrodden Cheeto-voting "po' white folks" who just want all the brown people to go away and let them get back to the "good ol' days". The world changes; get your head out of the sand and learn to cope. Being stupid and staying in the same place your whole life is why you have these problems, not because of immigrants.
This election cycle I was going around asking the conservative folks I know online "so, *why* do you want to go back to the good old days of the '40s or '50s? Is it because the tax rate for the corporations and the rich was over 50%, or is it just because women should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, gay folks should be in the closet and all minorities should ride in the back of the bus? Which one do you think the nice folks at Fox News mean?", and I can tell you that I got all kinds of reactions, from surprise to cussing, but they probably understood for the first time that what they sound like is that either they want a higher tax rate or they are bigots, and they don't want to admit to either. Too bad! ;-)
I agree a lot, with one exception which I will point out because I am a giant pedant...
Now, the people who *claimed* that they were on our side and then failed to vote? I can't even.
Not all failures are the same - the levels of voter disenfranchisement going on this election after the VRA was gutted are quite unprecedented in recent history.
Yeah, the vote suppression thing is appalling and part of the reason I'm so pissed of at the conservative movement, in addition to their traditional oppression on minorities and sexual health stances.
And I'm going to join hands with you in the pedantry, because I honestly did not mean "people who could not leave their jobs and go vote" or "people tried to vote and were prevented from doing so", I meant people who did not even bother to go when they could have and would have succeeded.
I also heard, do not know if it's true, that one of the Republican places that caught fire had democrat absentee ballots. At first I thought it was just gossip, but in this post-truth times, and with Trump insisting that the elections were rigged, I just dunno anymore... :-(
