Genetic vampirism (where people become vampires through genes, not through infection/being bitten).

Any books/films leap to your mind? DO tell!

I've already thought of Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls and and Tanith Lee's Blood Opera. But I know there are more, especially films....remind me, do!

Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking books have a living vampire in them (born as rather than bitten), but I forget the details. Pretty sure there are more, though...

I really have to watch Blade properly instead of in incoherent bits.

Thanks!

S P Somtow short story called "Beloved Disciple" (found in the White Wolf collection "Dark Destiny") suggests Jesus was the first naturally occurring vampire...

Oh, and "Carpe Jugulum" by Terry Pratchett features a family of vampires, some of whom are born, others made. The ones who were made (with the exception of Mum) are subservient to the others - a bit like the True Bloods in Blade.

Fantastic! Thanks Emma. Both sound like exactly what I need. I used to teach a page of Carpe Jugulum when I was teaching vamp fiction at Cornell - I just loved the vamps' daring youth subculture hinging on calling themselves Nigel and Tracy, or whatever it was!

How are you?

I'm pretty sure Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series has genetic vampirism.

Thanks very much! Is that the 'Vampire Harry Potter' series? Is it any good?

Is that what the kids are calling it these days? Hah!

I only read the first one, and I liked it very much. I've heard good things about the rest of the series, but I haven't had a chance to track them down yet. Definitely want to, though!

I'm quite intrigued too! I heard about it briefly at a vamp fiction conf. in Hertfordshire. There's no doubt that teen vampdom is where it's at these days, in terms of publishing phenomena.
