It really does make any book you're fond of seem pointless and suddenly very irritating.
I do not understand why there must be some hidden deep message in every word or clever reference. Perhaps the writer just thought that that particular word or phrase that we are forced to dissect for thematic purposes just sounded neat at that particular point in the paragraph.
