Updates, notes, and the monster under my bed

a little over a week ago I went to see a new doctor. I didn't like the one I had seen before, and I was pretty much in despair about how my hands felt. So off I went. I knew almost immediately that I  liked this doctor better. He asked questions about the friend who referred me to him , listened carefully to the history I gave him, and did about ( Read more... )

I took Neurontin at two various points in my life, once for nerve pain, once for hard-to-diagnose pain that my Dr thought was neurological. It worked magically in the first case in the best way possible (apparently it is used often to break the pain cycle, and when it's successful you don't need to be on it for long--that's what happened for me), the second time it only provided mild relief, but as it turned out the problem wasn't purely neurological. I don't know if this is at all a helpful testimonial, but I know when I first took it I was kind of freaked out by the prospect of taking a "neurological" drug, and one which was originally used to treat epilepsy, but I never had any side effects from it, and it managed pain for me quite well.

I hope you find your way to a pain-free body soon! The new Dr sounds like such an improvement on the old one.

yep, I read that it wasn't all that great of a med for epilepsy, but turned out work quite well for neurological pain.

when it is okay to push through the pain and when it is the kind of pain that simply insists that you stop

For what it's worth, it's really valuable to have that experience first. If the first bad pain you encounter is something like your hands, it's much harder to learn later "oh, this is something I can just work through."

I'm really glad that there is progress being made.

I'll be back in town soon. Remember that I live nearby if you need anything.

I'm amused that even the way your LJ page is designed includes not "post" but "touch" to add our thoughts. The tactile in you is everywhere. Hands are amazing and beautiful things.

We need to get you pamper gloves, the kind they use at beauty salons to 'soften and strengthen" nails or some such silliness. Then we'll put them on your hands, have you wander around all day like the beautiful princess you are and you'll remember to be gentle on your hands. :) You'd be allowed only to remove them to eat, clean and for gentle affection.
