[You see the Doctor, lying bruised, cut, and generally looking a bit maltreated on the floor in an empty room of a very posh, expensive looking mansion. There’s broken glass all around him, and it’s clear there’s been a few cowboys in here. But oddly, the Doctor is smiling giddily. He’s breathless, like he’s just heard some amazingly joyful news.]

I’m alive… [There’s a disbelieving, hoarse laugh that’s almost a sob as he rolls over and pushes himself slowly to his knees.] I’m still alive!

[Oh Doctor. There goes your hope spot. Because in the next instant, there’s a knocking in the background. A knocking of a hand on glass. A knocking that becomes clear. A knocking that is horribly, painfully familiar. One-two-three-four. One-two-three-four.

The Doctor’s face freezes in a heartbroken, terrifying sort of horror. One-two-three-four. He looks up and across. Standing there in a glass radiation chamber, tapping out another four-beat rhythm on the glass, is none other than Wilfred Mott.]

They gone then? Good oh. If you could let me out?

… Yeah.

Only this thing seems to be making a bit of noise!

[The Doctor sighs, speaking briskly as he gets to his feet.] The Master left the nuclear bolt running. It’s gone into overload.

Oh. And that’s bad then, is it?

No. Because the excess radiation gets vented inside there. Vinvocchi glass contains it. All 500,000 rads about to flood that thing.

Oh, well, you better let me out then!

Except it’s gone critical. Touch one control and it floods. [He takes out his sonic screwdriver, looks at it, twiddles it in his fingers.] Even this would set it off.

I’m sorry.

Sure. [He turns away from Wilf, looking down at the floor.]

Look, just leave me!

[There’s a pause as the Doctor looks up at Wilf with a sad smile on his face. Then, quite suddenly, he turns away again and starts speaking briskly. ] Oh, okay, alright then, I will. Because you just had to go in there, didn’t you? [The more he speaks, the more upset he sounds. He was so close to escaping, after everything he’s done, and then there was this.] You had to go and get stuck, oh yes! Because that’s who you are, Wilfred. You were always this. [His voice almost breaks on the next sentence.] Waiting for me, all this time.

[Wilfred’s voice is resigned. Quiet. A dignified old soldier going to his death.] Oh really, just leave me. I’m an old man, Doctor, I’ve had my time.

Well exactly, look at you. Not remotely important! But me… I could do so much more. So much more! But this is what I get. [He says, leaning on the desk in front of him.] My reward. And it’s not fair! [He finally does snap on those words, practically screaming them and knocking the papers and equipment off the desk as he stands up, all the stress and emotions he’s been bottling up finally coming to the fore. But after a moment, that fleeting anger and selfishness is gone. He stands up straight, takes in a few shaky breaths, and looks at Wilfred. And there’s only an old Time Lord left. An old Time Lord who’s just so, so tired of all of this. And he mutters quietly, decisively:] … I’ve lived too long.

[And so he walks - limps, really - towards Wilfred. Towards the containment chamber. Towards 500,000 rads about to flood that thing. Towards his death, with Wilfred begging him not to do it all the while, ( “No. No, don’t. No, don’t don’t don’t, please don’t! Please…”) and him not listening.]

Wilfred? [The two men look at each other, Wilfred desperate, unable to accept that it’s he who’s caused the Doctor’s death, the Doctor finally resigned, quiet, determined. Facing death with a straight back in the end.] It’s been my honour. Better be quick. Three, two, one -

[And on one, Wilfred presses the button inside one chamber, and the Doctor quickly opens the door and steps inside the other. The radiation hits immediately, and he gasps in pain, gradually forced down towards the floor until he lies there, curled up in a tiny, still ball in a corner.

Wilfred can do nothing but watch.

The feed ends.]
