HAHA. I never saw this, but it sounds so crazy you wonder why they just didn't decide to throw up their arms and make say, a Madam Fatal movie or something just to even out the balance.
There were a couple of excellent serials with a heroine as the star (JUNGLE GIRL and PERILS OF NYOKA come to mind, as well as the grandma of the cliffhangers, PERILS OF PAULINE). Why they brought Zorro into this and so had to pay licensing escapes me... it's not like Zorro is important to the plot. I think playing up the masked crimefighter as a woman would be its own draw, but then it's too late for me to barge into Republic offices and tell them my ideas.
And a recognizably female Zorro could inspire all sorts of fun rumors among the populace: is she the daughter of a predecessor? Is there a whole secret society out there maintaining the legacy of Zorro? Can Zorro change shape at will?
Without digging out my DVDs, I seem to recall that movie and serial Zorros were right away taken to be someone new in the role... not the original. It wasn't like the Phantom, where there was an ongoing activity keeping the character present.
The idea of a ghostly Zorro, with a modern descendant finding the cloak or mask and suddenly being filled with courage and athletic ability, offers some possibilities. But I'm afraid Hollywood would see it as a possible comedy and give Jim Carrey a call.
