I've heard people compare them before, yes. (Supernatural even has a British demon named Crowley now!) IMO, Good Omens is better on the world-building front; Supernatural has had some interesting storyarcs, but not all of the pieces of all of the mythologies they pull from fit together smoothly. What keeps me interested is the relationships between the characters--the brothers, the man and his angel, their other close friends and family. They're people so devoted to each other and what they do that dying and going to Hell is "Been there, done that, got the PTSD T-shirt." The plot can sometimes irk me, and there are eps where I wonder what certain writers were smoking in regards to character development, but I always come back to the fact that I adore the heart of who they are, and as long as they're showing signs of that person again next week, I'll stick around.
I really wish I'd had the time/energy to keep up with Supernatural this season. I keep running into all these intriguing gifs and pics on tumblr (why is Cas' face rotting off? What's a Leviathan?) but with no context. I suspect based on reviews that the actual plot's been really disappointing thus far, which makes me sad.
I don't know, it hasn't been SO bad, and there have been some really great moments (balanced, I suppose, by the really WTF?! ones.) To me, the overall arc seems... tired, like I keep waiting for it to get better, newer, more exciting, and it just never quite lives up to that. And losing Misha on my screen every week has been sad beyond the telling of it. *nods*

Sorry, forgot to check back. I'd actually really love answers, especially to the face rot thing. A pm would be nice if you don't want to leave spoilers lying around.

Basically, end of season six, Cas and Crowley were secretly working together to open Purgatory. Cas needed the power from the souls it contained to defeat Raphael. He tricked Crowley (never was planning on letting him have any power), took in all of the souls, killed Raphael, and creepily declared himself the new God
