ooc: RP with the fantabulous (and very very patient) johnmovinon. tm_northstar used with permission. Backdated to last weekend, during their New Zealand vacation. Or... whenever the vacation was, as it is entirely possible that I've lost a week somewhere o_O

John started to wake up slowly, his mind slowly coming to consciousness before his body. His eyes remained closed, but he reached out to the side - and found that no one was there.

So he turned over and reached out to the other side - it was always a good bet that someone would be there. Except there wasn't this time.

John cracked open his eyes and lifted his head, and looked around. Oh, right. He'd told his boys he was going to take a nap. They were having a great vacation and he was having a good day, but sometimes too much heat got to him, and drained him. Plus, they've been busy. Doug and JP said they would go for a swim, but he opted for the nap instead, or else he'd never make it through their last night of vacation and that would suck.

He got up and used the bathroom, and splashed water on his face. Then he wandered out into the main part of the suite, to see if anyone else was there. He didn't find anyone in it, but he did spy Doug out on the balcony. John slid open the door, and Doug glanced over his shoulder to see who it was.

"Hey, babe," John said, walking over to him. He dropped a kiss on Doug's bare shoulder, then leaned beside him, his elbows on the railing mirroring Doug's stance. "JP not here?"

"He said he was going to do something?"

John grinned. "Is he taunting the skydivers?"

Doug laughed. "Maybe."

"Wouldn't put it past him," John replied. "How was your swim?"

"Pretty wet," Doug said after a moment of deliberation. "There were some hot guys down there. The Maori are really hot. Did you ever see Once Were Warriors? I think I'd look pretty dumb with a tribal tattoo, though." He pushed his hand back through his damp hair, which only made it stand on end. "Did you have a good sleep? Are we tiring you out?"

"I had a good sleep, yeah," John said. "And no, you aren't tiring me out." He paused. "The heat and sun are. You know how I get over heated." Doug nodded, he knew. With his own mutation working like a radiator, John did a little better in colder climates. But, whatever. "I'm still having fun," he pointed out. Because that can't go unsaid. "I'm really glad we did this, you know?" He put a hand on the small of Doug's back, leaning into him a little bit more. He kissed Doug's cheek. "Kinda too bad it has to end tomorrow."

"Well, we do have our own cargo jet," Doug reminded him, and kissed him back on the lips. "And we can probably steal the Blackbird or something. Even if we all have really important, serious jobs now, I'm sure we can get away sometime. Like at Christmas! We can go to a log cabin and eat tofu turkey and have JP swear about how cold it is all the time."

John laughed. "God, he would so whine. Just because he could. And also making him eat tofu turkey would probably be the end of the world."

John paused for a moment, because he did have an idea for Christmas, but he didn't want it to seem like he was only focusing on Jean-Paul, but. "I was thinking... what if we took JP to Montreal to Christmas? I mean, he even talked about moving back there, but he said he's not going to, but. I still think he'd like to go back there, even to visit. And he'd probably love showing us around, you know? It's part of who he is." John slipped behind Doug, arms around his waist, looking out over the beach with him. "Think that might be okay? Jeanne-Marie and her boyfriend should totally come too, if they want. Can't imagine the twins being apart over the holidays."

"Sounds like it would be fun," Doug said, relaxing into John's embrace, wrapping his own arms around John's. After a moment, though, he looked back a little anxiously. "You really think he won't move? I mean, I guess it shouldn't matter that much because he can still be with us in like two seconds flat, but... I don't know. I just don't think it's good for him to be alone like that."

Suddenly, inspiration struck. "You know, we should meet that ex of his. What's his name? His older boyfriend from way back. He seems like a cool guy, and Jean-Paul probably needs that kind of... you know, guidance? Someone to lean on, cause his parents aren't there for him. And we all know Kelly's got his own problems right now with Wideawake and the elections and everything."

"Raymonde," John said, supplying the guy's name. "And I think that's a real good idea, babe, for us to meet him. I mean, I don't think JP would take well to us telling him he needs someone to lean on, even if he does. But I know he really wants us to meet him. We should tell JP to invite him up for a weekend sometime soon. That would be good."

John kissed behind Doug's ear lightly, but frowned to himself. "I don't think he'll move," he said quietly. "Not right now. You're right, he'd be lonely, I think. But if it's what he wants to do... we'll support him. We can make things work," John said confidently. "We will make things work." John didn't want to talk about how much he'd miss him, because they didn't know if it was happening for sure.

Doug hummed an agreement, and they became quiet, just looking out into the ocean.

"Can't believe we leave tomorrow," Doug said eventually.

"I know," John said. "But you know what the best part of that is?"

"Hmm?"

"That, this year, when we leave from your birthday vacation? I don't have to say goodbye. I don't have to go run off to some hideaway in some secret part of the world." John squeezed Doug a little with his arms. "I get to go home with you. All the crap I went through this year? Totally worth it, just for that. You're so worth it."

Doug beamed. "You know you'll hardly see me, right? I start at university next week. I'm going to be teaching and studying. I'm going to be living in the library. I'll just build a fort out of books and sleep in it." He sighs, happily, looking out at the horizon. "It's so cool to finally have a real job, J. To be doing something. I mean, it's really, incredibly scary, thinking about it. It's a huge responsibility. But it is what I want. And when we have a vacation next, I think I'll like it all the better because it's actually a vacation from something. Not just from me fiddling around on my laptop."

"I get the scary, babe, I really do," John said. But he was beaming too, for Doug. Doug sounded so happy, and proud, and John couldn't be more thrilled about that. "I'm really happy for you. And you're going to do fucking awesome, you know it?"

John turned Doug around so they were facing each other, and nuzzled at his jaw a little. "Important jobs, higher education, living together, serious relationships." John pulled away and smirked a little. "Does this officially make us grown ups now?"

Doug looked fake-shocked. "Noooo. Does it?" He scratched at his ear. "I'm still only a teenager. I demand at least one more year of hijinks before I settle down and wear slippers and smoke a pipe."

John barked some laughter. "Fair point," he said, grinning. "One more year. This means, of course, you're going to have to make sure that I don't get too old and serious acting." John brushed a kiss against his lips. Pulling back, he said with mock-seriousness. "Douglas Ramsey, do you accept that mission? It will likely be full of," John's voice dropped to a stage whisper, "hijinks."

Quelle shock. Quelle horreur. Doug's eyes went wide, and then he grabbed John in a kiss so passionate it could have come at the climax of a particularly scorching romantic film. "I accept!" he said, and then frowned. "We should've brought the Twister duvet with us. We could even play on the beach... in this strangely hot New Zealand weather. Think Storm's staying at the next hotel over? Or Wanda changed the orientation of the planet without telling anyone?"

"I blame the Skrulls," John said, completely deadpan. Which was a little hard to do, after that kiss, but he pulled it off.

Doug's eyes went wide, and he nodded in serious agreement. "Totally."

John laughed. "Or maybe we're from New York and I lived in Siberia for a year and anything could be a lot nicer then that. Heard it was supposed to start storming soon - like, weather, not the mutant - so I guess we just lucked out."

John's hands were settled on Doug's hips, and his thumbs rubbed over the smooth skin just about his shorts. He raised his eyebrows. "With the way we played Twister? I don't think it's exactly appropriate for the beaches." But he smirked. "But we'll totally have to play a game as a 'welcome home' activity when we get back."

"Oh, but I have to be a serious professor type when we get back," Doug said. "And you and JP have to save mutant youth from untold terrors." He stuck his tongue out of the corner of his mouth in concentration. "We should definitely have a date night, though. Us time. No books or paperwork or angst allowed. Just Dr. Pepper and milkshakes and good music and very, very good sex."

"Hey," John protested half-hearted. "You were the one who just said that we couldn't be too serious and grown-up. But," he allowed, "I suppose serious professors can play naked twister in their off time. And make sure none of their students ever find out."

John grinned. "But, deal. Absolutely. You, me, and a date night." He frowned in thought, but then nodded to himself, as if reassuring himself of something. "We'll be busy, but we can totally make it work. We'll, like, schedule in date nights. Even more so then now, so we make sure we see each other."

But then he grinned a little wickedly. John pressed his body into Doug's, pinning him to the railing. He nuzzled at Doug's jaw. "You know, we are on vacation. We don't need to wait 'till we get home to have really really good sex. Hell, we don't even have to wait for JP to do it."

He kissed Doug, then pulled back in thought. "Well. We can make it up to him later real good."

Doug looked down over the railing. Well, if John pushed him over he'd only fall in the pool... the probably freezing outdoor pool. So he ducked under John's arm and caught his hand, tugging him inside. "I'm not sure serious professors can play naked twister. Maybe naked scrabble. Naked hangman... Something with real academic merit." He bounced onto the bed, grinning up at John.

"Real academic merit," John repeated, trying his best not to roll his eyes as he threw a pillow at Doug. "Does 'fuck me now' come with a triple word score?"

"Only if you spell it with a Q," Doug answered in all seriousness. "And possibly an X."
