[He doesn't say another word and sneaks off to the boathouse. Briefly he considers this might be a trap to punish him for all the trouble caused and if it was, well, he deserves it.]

[When Riah gets there, he'll find Joe sitting with his back against the boathouse wall and staring out across the lake.]

Don't go blamin' yerself, y'hear?

[His usual humour is gone. Joe is completely serious right now.]

Were you not payin' the scarecrow enough?

The bastard never said anythin' about payment. Fockin' never said anythin' at all.

No lad. This ain't the norm.

[Joe pauses to suck back on his cigarette. It's heavy smoking day today.]

At least not since I've been 'ere, and I've been in this place a long time.

[Too long.]

[Chagrin.

Nel needs to remember that he was Joe before he was ever staff. A good man, never pointlessly malicious toward his charges.]

You made a mistake, and you owned up to it. Blame is good for peace of mind and little else.

I put a damn scarecrow up. Had no fockin' clue this was gonna happen.

[Her temper rises a little at that tone, but she quells most of it. He may have misunderstood.]

And I never implied that you did, Joseph.

[He's not mad with her, nor taking any tone other than frustration with himself. Joe feels like crap for what's happened and it'll be a long time before he's even close to forgiving himself.]

Never said you did either.

What the fuck kind of crows you got around here?

dontgiveafock November 7 2011, 10:07:16 UTC
Not the usual ones. I blew 'em fair outta the sky with a huntin' rifle and they got back up like nothin' happened.

The scarecrow at the party. The bad one. I think it's the one I put up.

A scarecrow did this? How?

dontgiveafock November 9 2011, 10:02:24 UTC
I dunno, Sollux. I really don't. Just that when I put the one up in the garden out back, weird shite started happenin'. Didn't think too much on it, but then the fockin' thing vanished entirely.

[And then came back before vanishing again. It was... eerie. Joe couldn't ever shake the feeling that the scarecrow was watching him.]
