It is my sad duty to announce that Mary Tamm, who played the first incarnation of Romana had passed away at the age of 62, following an 18 month battle with cancer. She joins the pantheon, Nick Courtney, Lis Sladen and Caroline John who have all died in the past year.

This is so sad, the recent spate of deaths we've had, and she was far too young to go. I was talking with a coworker about it this morning. He said he'd had the chance to meet her a few years ago and said she was just lovely, lovely, lovely.

At least with the Brig we knew it was coming at some point.

She was my husband's favorite Classic Who companion. He's pretty bummed about it. He actually woke up really early this morning to tell me because he was upset.

My favorite Romana, and one of my favorite companions overall. She was absolutely unimpressed with the Doctor and it drove him crazy! I think she still holds the title of companion with the best introductory camera shot. Good-bye Mary. (snif)

Same here! I saw Lalla Ward's Romana first and I wasn't impressed. Not that I don't like her, but Mary Tamm's was awesome. I loved Romana I and she's in my top five fave TV series companions. I can't believe how hard this hit me in the gut when I opened my LJ page. Ruined my day. Wasn't that great so far, but still.
