FIIGTA & New eBay Listings

Two things, at least tangentially related. Last night I had a couple of beers, decided "Fuck August 29, fuck the federal levee failure, and fuck hurricane season," and made reservations to spend nine days in Amsterdam in late August/early September. Chris can't go, but I'll be able to bring him back a good birthday present. I can in no way afford ( Read more... )

No, dude, that is totally cool. I did that for a couple 9/11s. You just kinda need to.

Also, I totally just bought my new rug at Home Depot because of you. I didn't even realize they HAD rugs.

Ha! Oh, I wish I weren't so strapped for cash so I could bid. Best auction description I've read in a while. LOVE the illustration.

The pronouns made me curious, though. If I recall correctly, I asked you on twitter a couple of months ago how you felt about gender neutrals, and you said they weren't personally to your taste. So I had a bit of an "eh?" moment reading them there. But then I got all happy, because I do love GN pronouns. Not just for their function (though that is awesome) but because there's something I find really pleasing about them, phonetically. I could say 'hir' all day. (And I do, haha, 'cause two of the people I live with use GNs.) Hir hir, hooray!

Hope you have a lovely time in Amsterdam. :)

They really aren't to my taste, but I have reached a weird point where I am totally unable to call myself "she" anymore but don't yet feel I have earned "he." (It's fine with me, great in fact, if other people call me "he," but I don't feel quite comfortable calling myself that.) So right now I'm settling for the neutral pronouns even though I don't like them that much. When I am able to start testosterone (maybe sooner, but definitely then), I'll start using/asking people to use "he" and "him."

Oh, and I'm using them on eBay in particular because I don't want to answer a million buyer queries saying "I thought Poppy Z. Brite was a girl!" I figure with "zie" and "hir," they'll know I'm up to some kind of genderqueerness and will either understand or not want to know about it. ;-P

Aha! That makes sense. It makes me think of... I dunno if you're aware, but there's a pitched battle that goes on over your gender designation at your author page on LibraryThing. Every time it gets changed to 'male', the same bloody-minded person switches it back to 'female'. I mention it because the only other option besides 'n/a' is 'other/contested/unknown'. Occasionally someone will switch it to the latter and it stays that way longer than it does 'male'. For some reason this conversation reminded me of that.

At my favorite coffeeshop, Goa, there's a series of house notebooks where people can write and draw stoned shit. On our trip in November, I found a page with the wonderful motto, "IT'S WAFFLE TIME, BEEYOTCH." It is always going to be waffle time, beeyotch for me on this trip. I like the half chocolate/half strawberry ones and the chocolate ones sprinkled with peanuts best.

Goa doesn't have the best weed by a long shot, but I love the comfortable atmosphere and make sure to spend enough on drinks, etc. to make up for the fact that I only buy one or two grams of weed there. And stroopwaffels and slagroom soesjes and Vlaamse Frites stands and broodjeharing and hell, even Febo!

Best product for my euro is at Grey Area, the Green Place (new), and the much-hyped but deserving Greenhouse.

Dear PZB,
I'm Dutch and a big fan of your work. It's wonderful to read you raving on about HEMA (and other things)! I totally agree: it used to be my no. 1 guaranteed good undies buy, but things have changed... Unfortunately I live in Berlin, otherwise I would have had to go and stalk you in your favorite waffle hangouts. I hope for you that Amsterdam will stay the way you like it and the extreme right-wing government in the making doesn't get their way.
