Let the weaving craze begin!

A few weeks ago, I got inspired by this post on the Threadbangers blog to have a go at weaving and maybe make myself a scarf. I made a search for more tutorials on very simple home-made looms and weaving and I found lots of stuff, but not much helpful information (at least for me, a very beginner). After finding some instructions on making a loom ( Read more... )

Hi, I have met Travis. He was doing a demo next to my husband's stall at an art event. He is very, very nice. If you email him with your questions (website has address http://actionweaver.com/), I am sure he would write you back with the answers.

cheers.

Thank you! I just might do that. I find him very talented and I hope he's not too busy to respond :)

I wish, but no :). That's Ida Maria, a Norwegian rock singer that I discovered during Epicfu's ending credits and I imediately became addicted to.
My icon is a screen shot I took from her music video Queen Of The World.

Now, if your curious on how I look like this is me. :)

Ah! She looks a lot like Natalie Wood during Rebel Without A Cause, that's why I was wondering if it was you, lol.

I've never tried weaving the way this guy does it, but I think he lets the excess bit of yarn just hang to the side when he introduces a new length. You could do that as well and once you're finished go back and stitch the loose ends into the fabric. Though I learned to always let the end and the beginning of the new one overlap by an inch or so in somewhere in the middle of a row. Especially if you push your rows a bit tighter together than he does, those overlapping points become pretty much invisible.

Oops, forgot to tell you how to finish your piece if you don't just want a fancy wall decoraton, loom and all.

Ok, once you think your fabric is long enough (or run out of material), tie a knot into two of the blue stings in your pictures (beige in the video)next to each other on one end, repeat untill all are secured, then do the same with the other end. you can leave those ends hanging loose and cut to the same length as fringes or thread them into your piece with a needle. I hope this makes sense, since I don't know the technical terms in English, sorry.

Thanks for the sugestion, it was clear enough for me. I learned that the vertical strings are the warp and the horizontal ones are the weft. These are terms I don't even know in my native language :)

Goody. See, I only knew the German terms and was too tired last night to look for a translation.

Good luck with your project!
