Finishing Knitwear

Okay, I have an old knitted blanket that I want to turn into a dress. However, I'm not sure how to keep the fabric from coming unraveled after it's sewn. I could hem it, but will that hold something as bulky as knitwear? I could also try to refinish the hems via knitting but I have no idea where to begin learning how to do that. Do a close zigzag on the seam allowance, perhaps before you cut it to the final size even. You can trace the pattern onto the fabric cut a little beyond that and then zigzag right on that line and cut off the excess after. If you have a serger/overlock, use that instead. Then sew the pattern together.

You could cover the seams with a stretchy piece of knit fabric, like bias taping a seam. Then you could cut off the allowance a lot closer to the seam and not have such bulk. I'm not quite sure about the type of knit you are using. Something hand knit may be quite a challenge and practice on a corner of fabric you can spare first.
