Pick something to expand your skills bit by bit. Do sampler squares of new stitches (and if you do enough, sew them together to make a pillow/blanket). Take up lace knitting. ;)

that is a really bad recommendation. Ever tried laying your face on a knitted pillow? You could knit corny squares and attach them into a vest.

I was thinking more along the lines of throw pillows, not bed pillows. :P

I began to knit a blanket but got tired after many months of having my work lie around, so a I used what I had by folding it over and putting a pillow into it, then crocheting the edges closed. I gave it to someone as a gift, but it was a flop, if you ask me.

i like to make purses. they aren't complicated at all. believe me, i can't sew for shit, and the 2nd thing i ever knitted was a purse and I get compliments on it all the time. they are really easy if you just stay simple.

how do you go about doing that? and do you line them with anything?

i knit a long thick piece that is the purse's body and then fold/pin it at where i want it to fold and where the actual purse part ends, leaving enough for a flap/ I then knit a longer, thinner piece that i slong enough to fit between the area of the purse that i fold and has enough room to fit around my arm (or hold in your hand if you prefer clutches). Just lay it out around the purse body as you knit to see how it will look. whien i get all of that done I use a yarn needle and do a whip stitch (i think that's what it is called... i don't sew) to attach the strap to the purse. you can also sew on a button and such.

I usually don't line them with anything because A. I am lazy and B.I don't stuff them with a lot of small items that would come out. But you can line them with anything pretty much, even tule (b/c its holes are so small that only microscopic things will fall out.)

I love making bags and ponchos, and I made my girlfriend a cushion cover which is cute, and I have a very cool pattern to make knitted kitties, if you'd like it.

I like to experiment with different thicknesses of wool and different thicknesses of needles too. Chunky wool+chunky needles= lots of knitting very fast, useful for folk like me who get dead bored.

Join a knitting community as well! There's loads around, and they'll be able to advise you as well. And once you can knit and purl, learning anything else is pretty easy, stich wise anyway. I'm still too scared to play with dpns and circs.

:D

Knitted Kitty

It's quick, it's really very easy (anything that isn't straight forward knitting can be found online so you know what you'e doing) it makes great gifts and it's cute as a button!
