Orenstein (2002) found that women had higher belief in the paranormal than men when other factors were not controlled. Is superstition always necessarily fun, though? I've met people who had some superstitions (about what they wore, did, where they walked, etc) control certain parts of their life too much, and it definitely didn't seem to be something they did for a lark. It was more like a belief they wanted to break out of, but were afraid to try because if they did and something bad happened, they'd end up blaming themselves for not taking the proper supertitious precautions. Depending on how you approach them, they can be anything from a fun game (don't step on a crack, etc) to a rut you get stuck in ( ... )

Oh, whoops. I didn't mean to imply that they were ALL fun. I just wanted to point out that many of them are fun, or start out as fun.
