I was pretty surprised too when it popped up as 'breaking news' on BBC News 24. The question that was asked on the news was is this going to be a disastrous move like the IndyCar split, where they operated two championships for a couple of years then had to rejoin?.
That was my immediate thought too: "Oh, gosh, splitting off worked so well for IndyCar..." (My second thought was "... or the World Chess Championship.") But I suppose it's possible that the motivations are more sensible and/or it can work out OK in the long run. (Are there any positve examples?)
