I'm pretty ignorant to Prop 8 too- but I had seen you bring it up and understood it dealt with banning gay marriage. Then today, my Flist exploded with anger against the fact that it passed. I wanted to ask you though, if you know, what exactly is going to happen to couples of same sex marriages who have already been wed? I mean, this is an awkward situation- you've given someone a right and then taken it away. So what happens to the people who have already been married? Is is all null and void? Has all the money they spent on their ceremony gone down the drain?
as far as i know those couples already wed will get to stay that way, as it would cause a lot of lawsuits and court drama and that in turn costs money that no one wants to spend or can afford. I'm pretty sure they aren't touching those people who already got married. and really, if this whole thing is over them calling marriage, then why not just ask it be called "union" or something and be done with it? i think its more than just calling it marriage, i think a lot of these fundamentalists will just never be happy as long as a gay person exists in the world. not all are this way, i know...but there are quite a few. augh, i'm just aggravated with this whole thing.

My boyfriend was the first person to ever suggest to me that it be called a "union" instead of a marriage. I'm so awkward when it comes to this stuff. But I think you and him are right. By simply changing a word- I think it would solve everyone's problems. It's silly- it's even more silly to say I agree that it would make me happier. But I don't want to oppress anyone. I watched a clip someone put up of McCain on the Ellen Degeneres* show, and she said calling it a union and not a marriage is like saying "you can sit here, but not there." And it's true. She's right
( ... )
I'm pretty sure that the marriages of those who have already been wed will be voided, and they will be stripped of what they were already given. I don't think that Prop 8 was just to take away their right to FUTURE marriages, but it was to eliminate ALL same-sex marriage. So if you got married in another state and move to CA, you won't be fucking married anymore.
I don't even want to talk about Prop 8. I'm so angry about it. I don't think it's totally hit me yet. I want to skin every last fucker who voted yes. I can't believe how fucking SELFISH they are, and that they are so PROUD of themselves for taking away another human being's rights. And for what? So they can have something that someone else cannot.
I've said it for years and I'll say it again, CALIFORNIA FUCKING SUCKS. It's full of the stupidest and most selfish people that I've ever fucking met. And that's a lot from a girl who grew up in dumb-fuck Northeastern Pennsylvania where the Amish and rednecks live.
