To the readers, a question

Jan 07, 2015 18:38

In all seriousness, when/what time of day do you guys read? And if applicable, how do you carve time out for it, between everything else? This wasn't an issue for me when I was a youngster, relatively speaking. But I'm having so much trouble concentrating, and/or finding time to read, that I'm considering going to bed an hour early with nothing but ( Read more... )

The last dozen years or so, the only places I've been able to reliably concentrate and read for any length of time are a) on a plane, and b) at my parents' house during the week between Christmas and New Year. Since I haven't done the latter since around 2009, you can see why I don't read much any more. :P

Heh. Yeah. I know how that is. For different reasons, but. I feel like I've lost something I didn't even realize could be taken away from me.

I'm impressed you are able to relax on weekends. I haven't been actually relaxed, weekends or otherwise, for probably 8+ years. Alas.

I take public transportation to and from work, so I usually read if I'm able to get a seat. Unless, I'm tired, I just listen to music while in a daze. 8D

Also, I read a bit after work if I'm not that tired. It helps that I don't have many household chores/responsibilities...stuff to take care of so I have more time. x3

I think the book is a factor too in concentration. I don't continue reading one if I'm not that into it after giving it the ~100 pages chance thing.

Wow, I'm amazed you will go 100 pages! Life is way too short for me to trudge along that far in a book I don't like. I give it 10-20 and then I'm out.

It's lovely that you have opportunities to read while commuting. That seems like it would be prime reading time. I drive, so I will not ever know. *g*

for reading actual books, in bed (I usually lie down to read a while before my actual "bed time" and when I'm somewhere waiting - for an appointment, for friends to show up, if I go out to eat by myself, etc. I often keep a book in the car just for that purpose - it can take me a while to finish (depending on what's going on) but it's easy to grab and throw in my bag as I get out of the car when I'm at my destination. but I'm lucky that I can read fic at work most days, because otherwise I'd feel so much further behind all the time.

I feel like I should have qualified that when I say books, I mean books both paper and electronic. I very rarely take actual paper books with me out of the house anymore; I have probably 1500 books on my iPad, and they go with me everywhere. So it's interesting to me, how many people hear 'books' and think 'paper'. I do it, too. I mean, I have a house full of the paper kind, and I'll never part with them, but my life is such that they are not convenient to the rare reading opportunities anymore. I sometimes wonder how many people that's true of nowadays.

On weekdays I read at work during lunch and while I eat my dinner at home. On weekends I read late at night. I also carry my book reader with me everywhere, when I was stuck in line at the car wash, I got some quality reading time in.

I'm kind of impressed that you are able to concentrate well enough to read anywhere, including in line waiting for other things. I probably could ten years ago, but now I just...can't. I've tried to change that through an act of will, but the bottom line is, getting older is hell on the concentrating. At least, for me.

I grew up with a large family, 1 sister and 2 brothers. I learned how to do homework with my sister and brother fighting, with the TV on, and etc... I really do tune the world out when I'm in a good story. :)
